Pfizer Inc. (NYSE: PFE):has agreed to pay $6 billion to settle claims that its generic drugs Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and Stendra are counterfeit or unsafe.

Pfizer, which made Cialis in 2007, has a reputation for developing “the most counterfeited drug in history.”
Eli Lilly & Co., which made Stendra in 2001, is said to have made one or more of these drugs on the basis of a counterfeit prescription drug. That’s when Pfizer developed and sold the drug, called Viagra. The drug is the latest in a number of counterfeited products that have come under scrutiny for their safety and efficacy.
The company is also said to have made three generic versions of the drug, namely,, and, among others. In 2011, Pfizer said the counterfeit versions were used to buy counterfeit medicines, which the company said included the name and dosage of Viagra. Pfizer says the counterfeit versions were so common they were a major part of the reason that Viagra was so popular.
Pfizer said it would pay about $1.4 billion to resolve the case. It also said it has agreed to settle another case brought by drug manufacturers against the U. S. Food and Drug Administration that accused Pfizer of selling counterfeit versions of Viagra on the Internet. The company said it would pay $250 million to resolve the case.
Pfizer is said to be in talks with the U. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) over possible changes to its labeling. However, it’s unclear how much of a share of the settlement will be for products that are not listed on the label. The company said the FDA may be able to approve a second case in the future.
The settlement will be made with Pfizer in February 2014. On Monday, the company said it will pay $12.4 million to settle two federal drug enforcement actions, brought by a drugmaker against a former employee of Pfizer, who had allegedly told the company that Viagra had been found to be counterfeit. The action was brought by drug manufacturer Bayer AG, which alleged that Bayer had improperly marketed the drug and improperly sold the drug to a competing pharmaceutical company. The action was brought by drugmaker Pfizer in March 2010.
The second case is the latest in a number of counterfeit drug lawsuits that have been filed against the company. On April 7, a federal jury in Connecticut awarded Pfizer $2.9 million, or $1.6 billion, in damages and $1.2 billion in punitive damages.
